The service

Outdoor lighting wired for the weather

Outdoor lighting has to deal with rain, frost, damp ground and direct sun: conditions that indoor fittings and cabling were never designed for. Linehan Mechanical & Electrical installs garden, driveway, security and feature lighting across Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London, using fittings and cable rated for outdoor use.

This is a service customers have reviewed directly, one TrustATrader review simply reads "Fitted outside lights excellent job." It's a small job on paper but, done badly, outdoor lighting is a genuine safety risk: water ingress into a junction box or a cable left unprotected underground doesn't fail safely.

Every job is quoted free. A few new fittings on an existing outdoor circuit can often be quoted from photos. A bigger garden lighting scheme, new armoured cable runs, or security lighting tied into a new circuit usually needs a site visit so we can see the layout and cable routes properly.

All outdoor lighting work carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and fittings carry their own manufacturer's warranty on top: warranty length varies by product.

What goes wrong with outdoor lighting

Outdoor circuits fail in ways indoor ones don't: mostly down to water, movement in the ground, and fittings that were never rated for outdoor use in the first place.

Water ingress

Fittings or joints with the wrong IP rating let water in over time, corroding connections and creating a shock risk.

Unprotected buried cable

Cable run underground without armouring or without being laid at the correct depth can be damaged by a spade, fence post or frost heave.

No RCD protection

Outdoor circuits must be RCD-protected | without it, a fault outdoors is far more dangerous because of damp ground and bare skin contact.

Corroded or incompatible fittings

Cheap fittings not designed for UK weather corrode quickly, especially coastal-style or budget garden lights left out all year.

Overloaded festoon or feature lighting

Decorative string lighting added without checking circuit capacity can trip breakers or overheat connectors.

Incorrect transformer siting

Low-voltage garden lighting transformers sited outdoors without the right enclosure are exposed to rain and condensation.

Common mistakes we see

  • ×Using indoor-rated fittings or extension leads outdoors
  • ×Burying cable without armour or route marking
  • ×Skipping RCD protection on an outdoor circuit
  • ×Running a long chain of extension leads instead of installing a proper outdoor socket or circuit
  • ×Not sealing cable entry points into fittings and junction boxes
  • ×Ignoring a flickering or tripping outdoor light instead of having it checked

How we work

How an outdoor lighting job runs

  1. 01

    Inspection

We look at the area to be lit, existing outdoor circuits if there are any, and cable routes | from photos for smaller jobs or on site for bigger schemes.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis and design

We plan fitting positions, cable routes (surface or buried), IP ratings needed for each location, and RCD protection for the circuit.

  3. 03

    Execution

Cable is run and fittings installed using outdoor-rated materials, with buried runs protected and joints properly sealed.

  4. 04

    Testing and verification

Insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity and RCD operation are all tested before the circuit is signed off as safe to use.

  5. 05

    Completion and guarantee

We leave the garden or driveway tidy, show you how the switching and any timers or sensors work, and the job carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee.

What you get

Why get outdoor lighting wired properly

Weatherproof from day one

Correct IP-rated fittings and sealed joints mean no water ingress issues months down the line.

Safer gardens and driveways

RCD-protected circuits and properly buried, armoured cable reduce shock risk outdoors.

Longer fitting lifespan

Materials chosen for UK weather outlast budget fittings that corrode within a season or two.

Better security

Correctly positioned and wired security lighting covers the areas it's meant to, triggered reliably.

Fewer call-backs

Proper installation first time means fewer tripped circuits or failed fittings needing attention later.

Peace of mind

Testing after every job, a 12-month guarantee, and NICEIC oversight of the standard of work.

In detail

Outdoor lighting in detail

Outdoor lighting spans everything from a single security light to a full garden lighting scheme: the materials and methods change depending on the job and the ground it's going into.

Materials used outdoors

Cable run outdoors, especially underground, is typically SWA (steel wire armoured) cable, chosen for its mechanical protection and suitability for burial. Where cable is run above ground or clipped to a wall, it needs to be rated for outdoor exposure to UV and weather.

Fittings are chosen by IP rating for their location: higher ratings near ground level or where they're exposed to direct rain, lower ratings under cover. Junction boxes and connectors used outdoors need to be weatherproof-rated, not standard indoor units.

Low-voltage garden lighting uses a transformer to step mains voltage down, which needs siting somewhere dry and ventilated, in a suitable enclosure if it's outside.

Methods and installation

Buried cable is laid at an appropriate depth with route-marker tape above it, so anyone digging later has a warning before they reach the cable. Where cable crosses a driveway or path, it's usually run through ducting for extra protection.

Every outdoor circuit is RCD-protected, which cuts the power quickly if a fault develops: essential outdoors where damp ground increases the risk from any fault. Fittings are mounted and sealed so cable entry points don't become a route for water ingress over time.

Switching and control varies by job: manual switches, photocell-triggered dusk-to-dawn lighting, PIR security sensors, or timers, wired to suit how the lighting will actually be used.

Common variations

A single security light added to an existing circuit is usually a short job, often quoted from photos. A full garden lighting scheme, spotlights, path lighting, feature lighting on planting, needs a site visit to plan cable routes and fitting positions properly.

Driveway and gate lighting often needs cable run a longer distance from the house, which is where SWA cable and correct burial depth matter most. Festoon or string lighting for patios and decking needs circuit capacity checked before fittings are added, particularly for longer runs.

Situations we commonly see

Homeowners adding security lighting after a break-in or near-miss, wanting PIR-triggered lights covering driveways and side access points. Garden renovations where new planting, decking or patios call for lighting designed in from the start rather than bolted on afterwards.

Older properties with outdoor lighting installed years ago, where fittings have corroded or cable has degraded and the whole circuit needs assessing rather than just replacing the visible fitting.

Residential vs commercial outdoor lighting

Domestic outdoor lighting is mostly security and garden lighting: driveways, patios, feature lighting, usually on a single circuit from the consumer unit. The focus is on weatherproofing and getting the right fitting for a relatively small area.

Commercial outdoor lighting, car parks, entrances, external signage, tends to involve longer cable runs, higher-capacity circuits, and sometimes separate distribution boards for outdoor areas. Linehan's team scales up for these larger external lighting projects as needed.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does outdoor lighting cost?

+

It depends on the scope. A single fitting is often quoted from photos. Larger schemes with new cable runs need a site visit for an accurate quote; all quotes are free.

How long does outdoor lighting installation take?

+

It depends on the scope. A single security light is usually straightforward, while a full garden lighting scheme with buried cable takes longer; we'll give you a timeframe with the quote.

Is outdoor lighting safe in the rain and over winter?

+

Yes, when fittings and cable are correctly IP-rated and RCD-protected, as we install it. That's exactly what outdoor-rated materials are designed for.

Do you offer a call-out if an outdoor light stops working?

+

Yes. A small call-out is £120, including the first hour, then £50 per hour after that.

What guarantee do you offer on outdoor lighting?

+

12 months on the workmanship. Fittings carry their own manufacturer's warranty on top, which varies by product.

Can you bury cable under my driveway or lawn?

+

Yes, using armoured cable laid at the correct depth, usually run through ducting under driveways and paths for extra protection.

Do you do security lighting as well as garden lighting?

+

Yes, PIR-triggered security lights, photocell dusk-to-dawn lighting, timers, and decorative garden lighting are all covered.

Can I call outside normal office hours?

+

The phone line is answered 24 hours a day. We don't promise a specific attendance time, but you can call any time.

Do you cover outdoor lighting across Hertfordshire?

+

Yes, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London are all covered.

How do I get a quote for outdoor lighting?
