The service
Domestic electrical work, from small jobs to full rewires
Gary Linehan has spent 20 years working as an electrician, starting out at 17. Linehan Mechanical & Electrical handles domestic electrics across Stevenage and the surrounding area: everything from changing a light switch in a one-bed flat through to rewiring a whole house. The same team also covers larger commercial projects, so domestic customers benefit from experience gained across a wide range of installation types and scales.
The company is a NICEIC Approved Contractor, meaning domestic installations are assessed against BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, and notifiable work is certified correctly under Part P of the Building Regulations.
Most domestic jobs are quoted from a few photos sent over before any visit is booked, which keeps things quick for simple work. Where the job is bigger, a rewire, a new consumer unit, several circuits, a site visit happens first so the quote reflects what's actually needed.
Work covers homeowners, landlords and new-build buyers dealing with snagging issues. Properties are left clean and tidy, and every job carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Reviews consistently mention punctuality, clear explanations and a tidy finish, which matters when work is being carried out inside an occupied home.

Common domestic electrical problems
Most domestic electrical issues fall into a handful of categories, but they're not always obvious until something fails.
Overloaded or outdated circuits
Older properties were wired for far fewer appliances than most households now run, which puts strain on circuits.
Ageing consumer units
Old fuseboards without RCBO or RCD protection don't trip as reliably on a fault, which increases shock and fire risk.
Hidden faults after DIY work
Previous DIY wiring, especially in older properties, can hide incorrect connections that only show up later.
Damp-affected outdoor circuits
Garden lighting or sockets fitted without the right IP rating degrade over time and become unsafe.
Flickering lights or tripping breakers
Often a sign of a loose connection or an overloaded circuit rather than a faulty bulb or appliance.
Common mistakes we see
- ×Ignoring a breaker that trips repeatedly instead of getting it checked
- ×Using unqualified labour for notifiable work like new circuits or consumer unit changes
- ×Ignoring an EICR when buying or letting a property
- ×Overloading extension leads instead of adding a proper socket
- ×Leaving old wiring untouched because 'it's always worked'

In detail
What domestic electrical work covers
A closer look at the materials, methods and situations involved in common domestic jobs.
Sockets, switches and small jobs
These are the most common domestic call-outs: a dead socket, a cracked switch plate, an extra socket needed for a new appliance. Cable is matched to the circuit's existing rating, and any signs of an underlying fault, scorch marks, loose terminals, are flagged rather than just covered over.
These jobs are usually quoted from photos. The £120 call-out charge includes the first hour on site, with £50 per hour after that for anything that takes longer.
Consumer unit (fuseboard) upgrades
A split-load 10-way consumer unit starts from £695 + VAT. Modern units use RCBOs on each circuit, which means a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit rather than cutting power to the whole property.
This is notifiable work under Part P, so it's certified and registered correctly once complete. Hager fuseboards, as an example, may carry around a 1-year manufacturer warranty on top of the 12-month workmanship guarantee.
Rewires, full and partial
A full rewire replaces all the cabling, sockets, switches and the consumer unit: typically needed in older properties or ahead of a major renovation. A partial rewire targets specific circuits or rooms, useful where only part of the property has an issue.
Rewires involve lifting floorboards and chasing walls where needed, so the property is protected with dust sheets and left tidy at the end of each day, not just at the end of the job.
Lighting and outdoor electrics
Internal lighting work covers everything from a single pendant to multi-circuit downlight installations, including two-way and multi-way switching. Outdoor lighting needs IP-rated fittings and armoured or SWA cable where it's buried, since standard indoor cable isn't rated for underground or damp use.
Garden sockets, outdoor power for sheds or workshops, and security lighting are all wired back through RCD-protected circuits for safety.
New-build snagging and fault finding
New-build properties sometimes have switches wired to the wrong lights, missing circuits, or sockets that don't work; this gets diagnosed and corrected as part of a wider fault-finding visit rather than guesswork.
Fault finding starts with isolating circuits and testing, rather than replacing parts speculatively, which keeps the cost down and finds the actual cause.
Residential vs light commercial differences
Most domestic properties run on a single-phase supply, which keeps the installation relatively straightforward compared with commercial sites. Even so, loads have grown over the years with more appliances, home office equipment and EV chargers than older consumer units were ever designed for.
Where a domestic property also has an annexe, home office or outbuilding used for business, the wiring sometimes needs to be split or protected differently to reflect that mixed use; this gets picked up and discussed during the initial visit rather than assumed.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does a domestic electrician call-out cost?
+
£120, which includes the first hour on site, then £50 per hour after that.
How much is a consumer unit upgrade?
+
A split-load 10-way consumer unit starts from £695 + VAT, depending on what's needed.
Do I need an EICR?
+
If you're letting a property, buying one, or it's been a while since the wiring was checked, an EICR is a sensible step. A typical 3-bed property with one fuseboard costs around £220, though this depends on property size.
How long does a rewire take?
+
This depends on the size of the property and whether it's a full or partial rewire; it's confirmed as part of the quote after a site visit.
Is the work guaranteed?
+
Yes, all workmanship carries a 12-month guarantee. Equipment installed also has its own manufacturer warranty, which varies by product.
Can you quote from photos?
+
Yes, small jobs are usually quoted from photos. Larger jobs like rewires need a site visit to scope properly.
Do you work evenings or out of hours?
+
The phone line is answered 24 hours a day. No fixed attendance time is promised, but you can always get through to discuss the job.
Do you cover my area?
+
