The service
Full and partial rewires
A rewire replaces the cabling, accessories and often the consumer unit throughout a property, bringing an older electrical installation fully up to current standards. A full rewire covers the whole house; a partial rewire targets specific areas: an extension, a kitchen, a loft conversion, or circuits that have been identified as faulty or dangerous.
Rewires are work customers have reviewed directly. Dean Neal wrote on TrustATrader: "Gary and the team done a full re wire of my house, can't recommend them highly enough, polite and on time, and also cleaned up after themselves. Work also to a very high standard." That's the standard we hold every rewire to, whether it's a full three-bed house or a single room.
Rewires are disruptive by nature: walls, floors and ceilings often need to be opened up to run new cable. We plan the work to keep that disruption to a minimum, working room by room where possible so the rest of the house stays usable, and we leave each area clean and tidy as we go, not just at the very end.
Whether you need a full rewire on an older property or a partial rewire for an extension or renovation, the work is designed, installed and tested to BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, and certified on completion.

Signs a property needs rewiring
Wiring doesn't last forever. Cable insulation degrades, circuits get overloaded as households add more appliances, and old installation methods simply don't meet current safety standards. Here's what to look out for.
Rubber or fabric-insulated cables
Found in properties wired before the 1960s-70s, this insulation perishes with age and can crack or crumble, exposing live conductors.
Round-pin sockets or old fittings
A clear sign the wiring behind them hasn't been updated in decades and likely doesn't meet current standards.
Frequent tripping or flickering lights
Can point to overloaded circuits, failing connections, or deteriorating cable insulation rather than a one-off fault.
No earthing on some circuits
Older installations sometimes lack proper earth continuity, removing a key layer of shock protection.
Burning smell or discolouration at sockets
A sign of overheating at a connection, which can develop into a fire risk if ignored.
EICR with multiple C1/C2 observations
When an inspection flags widespread issues rather than one or two isolated faults, a rewire is often more practical than repeated repairs.
Common mistakes we see
- ×Patching individual faults repeatedly instead of addressing wiring that's failing throughout the property
- ×Rewiring without upgrading the consumer unit to match
- ×Not testing circuits as they're completed, only at the very end
- ×Reusing old cable runs that don't meet current cross-sectional area requirements for the load
- ×Skipping proper containment and fire-stopping where cables pass through floors and walls
- ×Leaving no record of what was done: certification matters for future work and for selling the property
How we work
How we carry out a rewire
- 01
Inspection and quote
Larger rewires need a site visit so we can see the scope | property size, access, number of circuits | and give an accurate quote. A 10% deposit applies on larger jobs.
- 02
Diagnosis and planning
We check existing circuits, identify what's being kept and what's being replaced, and plan the work room by room to minimise disruption.
- 03
First fix
New cabling is run through walls, floors and ceilings, with containment and fire-stopping done properly as we go, not left for the end.
- 04
Second fix and testing
Sockets, switches, lighting and the consumer unit are connected, then every circuit is tested | insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, RCD operation, polarity | before anything is signed off.
- 05
Completion and guarantee
You get a full test certificate, a tidy, dust-managed site, and a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Payment is due 14 days from completion.

In detail
Rewires in detail
A rewire touches almost every part of a property's electrics, so here's a closer look at what's involved.
Materials used in a rewire
Modern rewires use twin-and-earth PVC-insulated cable (or low-smoke alternatives where required) sized correctly for each circuit's load, new consumer unit with RCD/RCBO protection, and current sockets, switches and light fittings. Cable sizing matters: undersized cable on a heavily loaded circuit like a cooker or shower can overheat even if everything else is installed correctly.
Containment, conduit, trunking or clipped cable routes, is chosen to suit the building construction, whether that's a solid-wall period property or a modern timber-frame extension.
Method: first fix and second fix
Rewires happen in two stages. First fix is running the new cabling through the property before walls and ceilings are closed up; this is the most disruptive stage, as floorboards may need lifting and chases cut into walls for cable routes. Second fix comes after plastering, and involves fitting sockets, switches, light fittings and the consumer unit, then connecting and testing everything.
On occupied properties we sequence the work to keep at least some rooms usable at any time, rather than opening the whole house up at once.
Full rewire vs partial rewire
A full rewire replaces the wiring and accessories throughout the entire property, usually alongside a new consumer unit: appropriate when wiring is old and deteriorating throughout. A partial rewire targets a defined area: an extension, a kitchen or bathroom being renovated, a loft conversion, or specific circuits identified as faulty. Partial rewires need careful planning to integrate the new circuits safely with what's being kept.
We'll always recommend based on condition, not just assume a full rewire is needed if a partial one genuinely covers the problem.
Typical situations
Common triggers include buying a period property with original wiring, extending or converting a loft, renovating a kitchen or bathroom, or an EICR flagging multiple serious defects. New-build and major refurbishment projects also need first and second fix electrics from scratch, which follows the same process as a rewire.
Each situation changes the scope but not the standard: every circuit gets tested regardless of whether it's a whole house or a single extension.
Domestic vs commercial rewires
Domestic rewires are usually single-phase and organised room by room around a household's daily life. Commercial rewires, shops, offices, small units, often need to be phased around trading hours or done out-of-hours to avoid shutting the business, and may involve three-phase supplies and more complex containment. We've handled both, from one-bed flats through to larger commercial fit-outs.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much does a rewire cost?
+
It depends on the size of the property, number of circuits, and access: every rewire is quoted individually. Larger rewires need a site visit before we can give an accurate price, and a 10% deposit applies.
How long does a full rewire take?
+
It varies with property size, but expect a full house rewire to take longer than most other electrical jobs since it covers first fix, plastering by others if needed, and second fix with full testing. We'll give you a realistic programme after the site visit.
Will I need to move out during a rewire?
+
Not always; we plan work room by room where possible so parts of the house stay usable. For a full rewire of an occupied home, some disruption is unavoidable, and we'll talk through what to expect before starting.
What's the difference between a full and partial rewire?
+
A full rewire replaces wiring and accessories throughout the whole property. A partial rewire covers a specific area, like an extension or a renovated kitchen, while keeping the rest of the existing wiring.
Do you make good after a rewire?
+
We manage the electrical work and containment carefully to minimise damage, and leave the site clean and tidy. Any plastering or redecoration beyond minimal making good is usually arranged separately.
What guarantee do you offer?
+
All workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months. Equipment installed carries the manufacturer's own warranty, which varies by product.
Can I call about a rewire outside office hours?
+
Yes, the phone operates 24 hours. We don't promise a specific attendance time, but you can call any time to discuss your project.
Do you need to see the property before quoting?
+
For a rewire, yes; this is a larger job that needs a site visit, not a photo-based quote, so we can assess the full scope properly.
How is payment handled on a rewire?
+
Payment is due 14 days from completion. Larger jobs, including most rewires, require a 10% deposit upfront.
Do you cover rewires outside Stevenage?
+
Yes, we carry out rewires across Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London.
