The service

One electrical contractor, every scope of work

Linehan Mechanical & Electrical Ltd, trading as Linehan Electrical, is an electrical contractor based in Stevenage and run by Gary Linehan, who's been in the trade for 20 years: he started at 17. The business covers the full range of electrical work: small domestic repairs, consumer unit upgrades, rewires, lighting, EV charger installation, fault finding, and large-scale commercial and industrial installations including LV panel boards.

Gary's own words sum up the range: work goes from changing a light switch in a one-bed flat to installing LV panel boards in huge warehouses. That breadth matters; it means the same contractor can quote a small domestic job on Monday and a large commercial installation on Tuesday, both to the same standard.

The business is an NICEIC Approved Contractor, independently assessed against the national standard for electrical work, and carries £10m public liability and £10m employers' liability insurance. Clients are a mix of homeowners and commercial and domestic clients across Stevenage, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and London.

Every job, whatever the size, starts with a free quote, photos for smaller jobs, a site visit for larger ones, and finishes with testing, certification where required, and a 12-month guarantee on the workmanship.

If it's left

Common electrical problems across domestic and commercial sites

Electrical issues show up differently in a house than in a warehouse or office, but the underlying risks, fire, shock, downtime, are the same.

Tripping circuits

A breaker that trips repeatedly points to an overloaded circuit, a failing appliance, or a cable fault. It's a symptom, not the problem itself.

Outdated consumer units or distribution boards

Old fuseboards and ageing distribution boards often lack modern RCD protection, leaving faults undetected until something fails.

Unqualified or DIY work

Work carried out by someone unqualified is one of the most common causes of later faults, and can fail an inspection or invalidate insurance.

No recent testing

Properties and commercial units that haven't been inspected in years can carry faults nobody's aware of.

Overloaded circuits and sockets

Running too much load through one circuit, or chaining extension leads, is a common cause of overheating.

Poor planning on larger installations

Panel boards and large circuits installed without proper load calculations cause problems later, from nuisance tripping to capacity issues as a site grows.

Common mistakes we see

  • ×Resetting a tripped breaker repeatedly without finding the cause
  • ×Buying or leasing a property without an EICR
  • ×Letting unqualified labour touch wiring to save money
  • ×Assuming an old board is fine because it's never tripped
  • ×Delaying a panel upgrade until a site outgrows its capacity
  • ×Ignoring warm sockets, burning smells or flickering lights

How we work

How a job runs, whatever the size

  1. 01

    Tell us the job

Call or send photos of the issue or scope. Small jobs are usually quoted from photos; larger domestic and commercial jobs get a free site visit.

  2. 02

    Diagnosis and planning

The fault or scope is confirmed with proper test equipment, and larger installations are planned against load and layout before work starts.

  3. 03

    The work

Installation, repair or rewiring is carried out to BS 7671 wiring regulations, with the site or property left clean at the end of each day.

  4. 04

    Testing and certification

Every job is tested on completion | continuity, insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance and RCD operation | and notifiable work is certified.

  5. 05

    Sign-off and guarantee

The work is explained before the team leaves. All workmanship is guaranteed for 12 months, with manufacturer warranties on top where equipment is installed.

In detail

What's covered under electrical services

Electrical work spans very different scales, materials and standards. Here's what's involved across the range.

Domestic electrical work

Sockets, switches, lighting, consumer unit upgrades, partial and full rewires, outdoor lighting and fault finding in houses and flats. Materials are standard twin-and-earth or flexible cable, RCD and RCBO-protected consumer units, and accessories to suit the property.

Domestic jobs range from a single faulty socket to a full rewire of an older property. Every job is quoted free first, with small jobs usually priced from photos.

Commercial and industrial electrical work

Office and retail fit-outs, warehouse lighting and power circuits, and large-scale installations including LV panel boards. Commercial jobs usually need a site visit to assess load, layout and access before a quote can be given.

Materials and specification scale up accordingly: heavier-gauge cable, three-phase distribution where needed, and panel boards sized to the site's demand, all installed to BS 7671.

Methods and standards

All work, domestic or commercial, is carried out to BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, and notified under Part P of the Building Regulations where required for domestic work.

Testing follows the same sequence regardless of scale: continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD operation, before anything is signed off as safe.

Variations by job type

Small call-outs, a dead circuit, a faulty switch, are usually one visit. Full rewires and larger commercial installations are scoped properly during the quote, since the time and materials needed depend heavily on the size and condition of the building.

EV charger installation, lighting and outdoor lighting sit in the middle: straightforward in most cases, but quoted individually since every property and vehicle setup is different.

Residential versus commercial considerations

Residential jobs are usually about safety, comfort and compliance for a sale or let: an EICR, a fuseboard upgrade, better lighting. Commercial jobs are often about capacity and uptime: a panel board that can handle growth, lighting that meets the needs of a working warehouse or office, and installations planned so they don't interrupt a business more than necessary.

Both get the same standard of testing and the same 12-month workmanship guarantee, but commercial jobs typically need more planning time before work starts on site.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does electrical work cost?
